MANILA, Philippines — The legacy of distinguished Filipino legal scholars Erlinda Arce Espiritu and Benjamin A. Espiritu Sr. continues to shape future generations as their family formally establishes endowments in their honor at Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU).
Remembered for their shared dedication to legal scholarship and public service, the couple began their journey as young scholars at Harvard Law School, where both distinguished themselves among the institution’s top students. Their time at Harvard marked the beginning of a partnership grounded in a deep commitment to the legal profession.
Erlinda would go on to make history as the first woman to receive a degree from Harvard Law School, a milestone that quietly but powerfully expanded what was possible for Filipinos and for women in the legal profession.
Their lives after Harvard were shaped by the same commitment they started with: a deep respect for the law and its role in society. Benjamin Espiritu Sr. would later bring this into the classroom, teaching International Law at Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU), where he also contributed to the MLQU Law Journal and became part of the University’s academic life.
That sense of purpose carried into the next generation. Their only child, BGEN. Dr. Benjamin I. Espiritu, AFP (Res), PhD, MNSA, built a path that crossed public service, business, and education. He served as Governor of Oriental Mindoro, during which the province was elevated to first-class status, while also taking on leadership roles in both corporate and academic institutions.
Today, the Espiritu family is carrying forward the couple’s legacy through initiatives that invest in the next generation of legal minds. On March 23, representing the family, Dr. Espiritu, together with MLQU Chairman and President Atty. Paquito N. Ochoa, Jr., formalized the establishment of the Benjamin A. Espiritu Sr. Endowment Fund for International Law, supported by a ₱1,000,000 contribution dedicated to strengthening the study and teaching of international law at the MLQU School of Law. During the signing, Atty. Ochoa formally conferred the honor, recognizing the lasting imprint of the Espiritu family on legal education.
“My parents believed deeply in the power of education and in the responsibility of lawyers to serve society with integrity and purpose. Through these endowments, our family hopes to honor their legacy while helping nurture future generations of legal scholars and practitioners,” said Dr. Espiritu.
The new endowment stands alongside an earlier one created in Erlinda’s name—the Erlinda Arce Espiritu Professorial Chair in Civil Law and Innovation, which was also supported by a ₱1,000,000 endowment. Together, these bring the family’s total contribution to ₱2,000,000, strengthening MLQU’s commitment to excellence in legal education and scholarship.
Through the establishment of the said Endowment Fund, the Espiritu family continue to uphold the values of integrity, leadership, and education, ensuring continued excellence in legal scholarship for future generations.
