Herma Shipyard, Inc. (HSI) recently launched the 18 mega barrel (MB) oil tanker M/Tkr Malawig from its Mariveles, Bataan facility.

Designed and constructed entirely by HSI, the vessel is the 10th double hull, double bottom International Association of Classification Societies (IACS)-classed product tanker built for affiliate company, Herma Shipping & Transport Corporation (HSTC).

The 86.10-meter-long M/Tkr Malawig has a length between perpendiculars of 80.933 meters, moulded breadth of 13.720 meters, and moulded depth of 5.00 meters. It can transport 18,000 barrels of petroleum at 95% capacity. It features:

• Slop tanks with a total capacity of 70.36 cubic meters

• Fresh water tanks capable of storing 80.79 cubic meters

• Ballast tanks holding 1,024.94 cubic meters

• Fuel oil tanks with a 91.06 cubic meter capacity

The vessel is classified by American Bureau of Shipping, a member of IACS, a technical organization comprising 12 marine classification societies that promotes safety, pollution prevention, and high standards in the maritime industry, with over 90% of the world’s merchant shipping tonnage classified by its members. The tanker also complies with the Philippine Maritime Industry Authority regulations.

The launch follows recent deliveries of M/Tkr Mayabong and M/Tkr Maginoo, both 12MB tankers capable of carrying three petroleum grades simultaneously.

HSI is also preparing to launch another 18MB petroleum tanker in July 2025, further expanding its fleet of modern tankers.

“This launching highlights our dedication to Filipino shipbuilding excellence,” said Herminio Esguerra, founder and chairman of The Herma Group.

Malawig means Malalim (deep) at Malawak (wide). Sa (In) HSI, Malalim sa dedikasyon (dedication is deep), at (and) Malawak sa Kaalaman (knowledge is wide).”

Esguerra said the achievement reflects the hard work, expertise, and perseverance of the Filipino maritime industry.

The company said the launch underscores the company’s commitment to “producing high-quality, internationally certified tankers” in the country.

HSI and HSTC belong to The Herma Group, founded in 1985, which has grown into a diverse conglomerate covering shipbuilding, maritime infrastructure, marine transport & logistics, petroleum supply, environmental services, agribusiness, shared corporate services and property development starting from a single barge operation.
